The past week has been quite eventful for me. I’ve seen two movies, listened to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and caught up with a lot of people that I’ve missed while I was at Waterloo. It feels good to be home; I missed Toronto while I was at Waterloo. However, now I miss the people in Waterloo now that I’m home.

Star Trek

I saw Star Trek on Tuesday at AMC Yonge & Dundas. The show was presented in “ETX”, which after a bit of research seems to be IMAX Light. The screen was larger than a typical screen, and the sound was excellent. However, I think it would of been a lot more beneficial to see it in IMAX. The ETX experience doesn’t seem to be the same as an IMAX experience. My friends and I had to move seats, due to the fact that AMC was trying to maximize seating, causing the seats in front of us to cut off the bottom quarter of the screen.

Now enough about the theatre and onto what I thought of the movie. I liked the movie. I am not a hardcore trekkie, but I do tend to somewhat like sci-fi films. I find that the technology in these films amaze me, and I hope that one day (hopefully during my lifetime) that we develop these technologies. After all, isn’t everyone curious if anything is out there?

If you haven’t seen Star Trek yet skip the following paragraph:

I feel sorry for the Vulcan children. Having to spend each day in a pod, learning from a computer. I hope that this does not happen to education in the future. Teachers are a valuable learning resource. However, those study pods would be great when you have an upcoming test or exam, since digging through a textbook is not efficient and googling doesn’t always get you the correct answer.

Now for the part where the Kirk’s father has to manually pilot the ship to save everyone, couldn’t this have been done remotely from one of the escape shuttles? Also, what is up with all the latest sci-fi movies not having aesthetically pleasing spacecraft? You would think after Star Wars Episode 1 with its beautiful Naboo spaceships that the rest would follow. Oh well, apparently there are rumors that there will be another Star Trek movie, and I hope that they at least make some beautiful spaceships.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra

Now seeing an orchestra play live is completely different from hearing a recording. Taking advantage of the TSO’s soundcheck discount, I was able to score choir loft seats for $12 each. They performed a few pieces by Rachmaninoff & Bernstein, but I was mainly there for the Rachmaninoff. For those who’ve seen either the Nodame Cantabile Anime or Drama, you know why. The TSO performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Chiaki, the lead male in Nodame Cantabile, performed this song and it sounds excellent live. I look forward to attending more TSO performances in the future.

Angels and Demons

Now this was unexpected. I wasn’t planning on seeing a second movie within the same week. It’s also surprising that I saw it since I didn’t see the first movie or have read either of the books. It was better than my expectations, but I won’t write too much since it’s too new and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. So all I have to say to you is… go and see it!

Now that I’ve been back in Toronto for a good two weeks, it’s time to resume the summer job search. I’ve applied to a few places so far, but time is ticking and there are more applications to fill out. I’m optimistic, and am hoping of the best.

In terms of types of job, this time I’m somewhat looking for something that will give me a range of experience. I’m either looking for a job that will throw me wherever is necessary within the marketing field, or at least one that will give me somewhat of a preview. I’m aiming to make sure that I really want to do marketing before I take any more steps.

One thing I’ve noticed is that UW somewhat creates a distorted environment for job hunting imo. Job Mine spoils you. So many good jobs in one place, and although the resume upload system is frustrating, it’s relatively easy to apply. I guess that’s one thing that I’ll miss. (Although I won’t miss the last-minute job applying…) Who knows, I might consider doing that MBET program or something…

So I’m sitting on a greyhound from Toronto to Waterloo. It doesn’t look like April. All this snow and cold. What us happening to the world?

I turned twenty one on Saturday. (thanks to everyone who came out~) I don’t feel any older or different. I guess as you get older age becomes only a number and nothing more. All that came into my mind is that I’m now 9 years to thirty. Now I wonder what I’ll feel like then.

I think I need to start a “must do before thirty” list. There are so many things that I want to do and it feels like time is being wasted. So I guess I’ll start it here.

Things to Do Before Thirty:
Graduate
See the Philippines
Visit Japan and Korea
Visit Paris and London
Get my own place to live

Well I guess that’s enough to start. I’ll add to this as time goes on. I at meat know that I’ll accomplish two of these before thirty for sure.

Last class of the term ended about 1.5 hours ago. Now what to do… first exam on the 13th, and then the second on the 21st. Need to start studying for those soon. Not too worried about marketing on the 13th, but really worried about microecon on the 21st.

In other things, I feel old. I’m turning 21 tomorrow. You never notice how fast time goes, and I think as you get older time moves faster. I swear I’ll be turning 30 before I even notice it. Let’s see where life takes me, and what I end up doing, and who I meet along the way.

I still need to find a job for the summer, but let’s see what happens. I’ve made my short list of where to apply to, now all I need to do is finally apply. There are a lot of interesting places that I want to work, mainly because I want to see if marketing is what I really want to do. Hopefully I do get some kind of marketing job. Let me know if you have any connections!

Well it’s the last week of classes. Papers are due, presentations are to be made, and the stress is above the boiling point. I’m done 2 of 3 major projects, and have just a few things left to go. Only two exams this term, so at least I don’t have too many of those things to worry about. Tomorrow is my last presentation, and the last paper is due Wednesday.

Another thing that I’m worried about is finding a summer job. So far, I haven’t been working 100 percent at finding a job, and I guess it shows. I’m looking to get a job within the marketingadvertising field, just to get a preview of what I’m getting into. After all, I want to choose marketing as my specialization at Ryerson.

Speaking of Ryerson, I’ve gotten in so far for 2 of the 3 programs that I’ve applied for. Of course the one that I haven’t received a decision for is the one I really want (BComm. for Management). I’ve gotten acceptances for BComm. IT Management and BComm. Retail management. We’ll see how it goes…
